Uzbekistan Receives $260mn Boost from Islamic Development Bank for Rural Revamp

In a bid to revitalize its rural landscape, Uzbekistan has secured a substantial $260 million funding injection from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).

This financial infusion, forming part of a broader $293.5 million initiative, is set to overhaul the nation’s countryside.

The funding blueprint outlines a strategic allocation of resources, with a substantial portion earmarked for infrastructural development. Additionally, $15.9 million is allocated for advisory services, $2.5 million for project support, and a $15 million contingency reserve.

This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment to rural revitalization, including the construction of 20 schools, 14 kindergartens, and 10 family doctor offices, primarily focusing on the Samarkand region.

Significant improvements in essential utilities are also planned, including the development of 200 km of drinking water facilities, 368 km of electrical networks, and 330 km of roads, along with the installation of 53 transformers to power these burgeoning rural communities.

This funding agreement builds upon a prior collaboration between the IsDB and Uzbekistan in April 2023, which allocated $136.7 million for the modernization of the M39 road and the enhancement of preschool education nationwide.

The ongoing partnership underscores a shared vision for the country’s development, with rural modernization playing a pivotal role. As the project unfolds between 2024 and 2028, its impact on targeted regions is anticipated to be substantial, potentially setting a benchmark for rural development efforts globally.
